This is a heat-band problem more than an age problem, though the two compound each other here. Peoria's household stock is overwhelmingly 2000s-era construction, and that generation of builder-installed openers was speced for a lighter door and a garage that wasn't expected to sit at extreme heat for months at a time. Across a service area with over 50,000 households and roughly 40,000 owner-occupied houses, that's a huge number of units running past their designed thermal load every summer.
The failure mode is predictable: plastic gears and belt materials degrade faster under sustained heat cycling than they would in a milder climate, so an opener rated for a 15-year lifespan elsewhere often shows real wear by year 8 or 10 here. Add a heavier insulated door - common in later builds across the area - on top of an opener sized for the original lighter panel, and you get chronic overload symptoms: slow starts, mid-travel stalls, and motors that run hot to the touch.
We can't make heat-band wear disappear. What we can do is size the replacement opener to the door and the climate instead of just matching what was there, which is the one step that actually stops the callback.
